The university is located in Rajabheta, Assam and is a public state university. It was founded in the year 1965-66, making it the second oldest university in North-East India. The Directorate of Open and Distance Learning (DODL) was established in 2001, in Rajabheta district of Assam with an objective of providing higher distance education to those candidates who either working or cannot study due to economic or other reasons.
